Why are we undertaking consultation with the community?

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council has commissioned The Urbanists to review and update the existing Placemaking Plan for Merthyr Tydfil town centre. The consultation aims to ensure that the wants and needs of the community are considered and reflected in the development of the updated Placemaking Plan.

What is a Placemaking Plan?

A Placemaking Plan provides the means to set an agreed place vision for the town centre that is supported by stakeholders and shaped by the knowledge of local experts (businesses and residents). The Plan can then be used to deliver investment that enhances diversity and resilience and increases vitality. Placemaking Plans aim to ensure that all aspects that make a place great for living, working and visiting are taken into account.

Why is the Placemaking Plan important for Merthyr Tydfil?

Placemaking Plans are needed to help Local Authorities to apply for funding that can be used for regeneration projects within Merthyr Tydfil town centre.

How long does it take for a Placemaking Plan to be delivered?

A Placemaking Plan is a long term Plan for a place. They are delivered over a 10-15 year period. However, they do also include short-term actions and projects that can deliver immediate change creating momentum in town centres.

What’s the community’s role in shaping the Placemaking Plan and the future of Merthyr Tydfil?

To ensure that the needs and aspirations of the local community are reflected within the Placemaking Plan, an engagement strategy has been developed. The strategy identifies the local residents, students and business owners as key stakeholders to engage with.

What do we want to get from the consultations?

We want to understand what the most important issues and opportunities to the local community and groups and future ambitions are for Merthyr Tydfil town centre.
